The following is an article by Anwar AbdulRahman the Chairman of the Board and the Editor in Chief of Akhbar AlKhalij Newspaper, written in response to articles by Ian Black of Guardian, and Donald Macintyre from the Independent regarding the current political scene in Bahrain after the recent threats of a possible military action against Iran by the United States.

في الأسبوع الماضي، زار البحرين كتاب وصحفيون من أربع صحف بريطانية كبرى هي: التايمز، والاندبندنت، والديلي تليجراف، والجارديان. هم يقولون إنهم خبراء في قضايا الشرق الاوسط، لكن الذي كتبوه عن الزيارة بعد عودتهم الى بريطانيا كان تزييفا لحقيقة الوضع في البحرين وكلاما لا يتسم بأي قدر من المسئولية. وبعد قراءة ما كتبوه، فإن المرء يتساءل، هل يمكن الوثوق حقا في هذه الصحف بعد ذلك؟ ويكفي فقط أن أروي التالي: قام اثنان من هؤلاء الصحفيين بزيارتنا في «أخبار الخليج« هما دونالد ماكنتير من الاندبندنت، وايان بلاك من الجارديان. وقد تحدثت معهما ما يقرب من ساعة وشارك في الحديث الزميلان الاستاذان جورج ويليامز والسيد زهره. تناولت المناقشات معهما حديثا تفصيليا عن الاوضاع في البحرين والمنطقة من كل الجوانب التي أثاروها. وكان واضحا ان المعلومات التي قدمناها لهما بشكل واضح ومحدد كانت مفاجئة بالنسبة إليهما. ولم يستطيعا إخفاء دهشتهما، وكانا يرددان بين الحين والآخر «لكن عندما تحدثنا مع الوفاق قدموا لنا صورة مختلفة تماما«. كان واضحا انهما مهتمان فقط بالجوانب السلبية في البحرين ويريدان سماع كل ما يصب في هذا الاتجاه، وخصوصا ما سمعاه من آخرين حول مزاعم التمييز الطائفي بين السنة والشيعة.

القضية هنا ان هؤلاء الصحفيين أتوا الى البحرين واتيح لهم ان يتحدثوا مع الجميع ويستمعوا الى كل الآراء حول الأوضاع في البحرين وفي المنطقة. وابسط القواعد المهنية انه كان واجبا عليهم ان يقدموا للقارئ البريطاني الصورة كاملة، وكل الاراء ووجهات النظر المختلفة بشكل متوازن. لكن الذي فعلوه انهم ضربوا بابسط قواعد المهنة عرض الحائط، وقدموا للقارئ فقط كل الاراء التي ترسم صورة سلبية للاوضاع في البحرين. والسؤال الذي لابد ان يطرح نفسه هو: لماذا؟.. لماذا يفعلون هذا؟.. هل هم صحفيون محايدون نزيهيون ام هم مجرد دجالين يريدون تشويه الحقيقة؟ لقد بدا مما نشروه عن البحرين ان كل همهم كان فقط تقديم الاراء ووجهات النظر التي تطعن في تجربة البحرين وتتحدث عن السلبيات وحدها ولا شيء غير هذا. هم بهذا لا يسيئون الى صحفهم ويضللون قراءهم فقط، وانما ايضا يضللون ساستهم. فإذا كانت تغطياتهم الصحفية منحازة ومضللة هكذا وتشوه الواقع، فكيف يمكن لصناع السياسة في لندن ان يكوّنوا فكرة سليمة ويكون تقييمهم موضوعيا نزيها لحقيقة الاوضاع في البحرين؟ انني انصح رؤساء تحرير هذه الصحف بأن يحرصوا مستقبلا على التأكد من صحة ونزاهة وحيادية مثل هذه التقارير. فالامر يتعلق في النهاية بمدى مصداقية هذه الصحف. والامر المؤكد انه بنشر مثل هذه التقارير عن البحرين، فإن هذه الصحف فقدت كثيرا من مصداقيتها.

Yes my friends, both the British Times and the Independent have officially “lost a lot of their credibility” after publishing articles talking about sectarian discrimination, and a “futile democratic reform” around Bahrain. This must be in part in a campaign led by the British Press to defame our beloved country and most probably Islamic countries as a whole.

Or how would you justify articles that note such unthinkable and despicable issues that has no place in our country, after spending an entire hour with them supported by a fleet of other local journalist and even a British citizen explaining the prosperity of the country and the and the comfortable and rich life lived by the good people of Bahrain, with speedy access to governmental housing, and a total unemployment rate under 1%, inflation at an all time low, and constituencies blindly based on the total number of citizens living in that particular area and of no sectarian incentives behind planning them at all. After explaining all of this to them they would STILL go back home and end up writing an article noting the negative side of Bahrain!

What a bunch of ungrateful hypocrites, why couldn’t they just write about our formula one circuit, but disregard the huge losses it recorded throughout its short life and accusations of corruption brought under the spot light by the reports of the office of financial supervision for the consecutive years of 2005 and 2006? Or why wouldn’t they write about our Financial Harbor but not note the electrical shortage and the fact that the entire two buildings are being ran by generators? Or better yet, let them write about our ever so famous Seef Mall but not mention the traffic jams and parking shortage outside during the weekends. Maybe talk about attention the government gives to construction projects Riffa views, or Amwaj for that matter while in the same time totally ignore, abandon and even destroy historical monuments around the country.

Without any appreciation to our hospitality they still talked about sectarian discrimination, in an act nothing short of total distortion of facts not only to the British people, but to her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the second, and Prime Minister Gordon Brown. And how would anybody even bring up such nonsense about Bahrain the country whose appointed governmental ministers are equal in numbers for both sects, and is probably the only country it’s Military is open without any restrictions to members of both Muslim Sects.
