Not My Hero!

Submitted by moodz on Saturday, 21 July 200714 Comments

JUMA Al Dossary has finally left Guantanamo Bay, just over a month after he again tried to commit suicide, according to his lawyers.

The 33-year-old father cut his lower abdomen with a piece of metal and almost severed one of his arteries at the end of last month – just weeks before he was eventually released.

Guards saved him after noticing he had fainted, said lawyers who have represented Bahraini inmates at the prison.

However, just weeks later he has finally been reunited with his family after spending more than five years behind bars at Guantanamo Bay.

He was among 16 Saudi nationals freed and transferred to Riyadh yesterday morning.

The US military previously said Mr Al Dossary, who has dual Bahraini-Saudi nationality, tried to kill himself at least 13 times in captivity. However, his family yesterday said he appeared to be in good health.

His brother-in-law Ahmed, who spoke to Juma on the phone, said he was delighted to have been released into Saudi custody. Via GDN

I simply can not understand why is this guy being treated like a national hero? Now I understand the horrors and the mental and physical pressure the inmates of gitmo endured, I’ve read over and over stories and tales of continuous unbearable torture and the unimaginable interrogation techniques they were put under, which is all fine (I weep for them, from a human to human standpoint.. maybe) but that is it.

Why have we forgotten that our local prisons around the region have stories like this till today? Have we forgotten the interrogation techniques that were used in Bahraini prisons during the 90s era? The scandals of rape and sexual harassment in Egyptian prisons that found its way to youtube? Have we forgotten what happened in the notorious AbuGhraib prison before the American invasion? The torture clips of Saddam Hussain? Why is this all of a sudden breaking news to us? why is this guy being treated like some national hero that we should be proud of and pay tribute to the local human right watchdogs and mps that worked for his release?

The guy is NOT Bahraini for god’s sake! That is beside the fact that he is a suspected terrorist on the loose! Let me share with you just who is “Juma Mohammed Abdul Latif Al Dossary”:

1. The detainee traveled from his home in Saudi Arabia to Afghanistan in 1989 using an Arab guest house in Pakistan. In Afghanistan the detainee trained at the al-Siddeek training camp where he received instruction on the AK-47.
2. The Detainee traveled to Bosnia in 1995 to participate in the jihad in exchange for 10,000 Saudi Riyals.
3. The Detainee stated that he traveled to Baku, Azerbaijan in 1996 to join other Arabs and to fight in Chechnya.
4. The Detainee was arrested by Saudi authorities for questioning in the Khobar Towers bombing in 1996.
5. The detainee obtained a passport from Bahrain after his Saudi passport was revoked.
6. The detainee traveled from the United States to Afghanistan via Bahrain and Iran in November 2001.
7. The detainee was present at Tora Bora.
8. The detainee crossed the border from Afghanistan to Pakistan in December 2001 with neither documentation nor authority and surrendered to Pakistani authorities.
9. A newspaper article, which appeared in the Buffalo News on May 19 last year, claims he visited western New York State to recruit Yemeni-Americans on behalf of Al Qaeda. (Source)

In his response to the accusations above (same source above) AlDossary replies:

“I have had two passports up to now. Both Saudi Arabian and Bahrain delegations interrogated me and I have no problem with either one. I got the Bahrain passport with the approval of the Saudi Arabian government to keep both passports. It wasn’t illegal and I don’t understand what this has to do with A1 Qaeda.”

The guy carried two passports?! Is dual citizenship even allowed under the laws of Bahrain?! And why are we granting a suspected terrorist the citizenship? Do they do any background checks on those clowns they drag here? Did it pass them that he was interrogated in AlKhobbar bombing RIGHT before him being granted the “Bahraini Passport”?! And a recruiter for AlQaeda in the US?

Letting this guy loose without trial is absolutely unjustified, he is a suspected terrorist and a member of a banned organization until proven otherwise.

Same theory that made Bin Laden a hero in the eyes of many. Not because he has actually done anything good, but because he is on the opposite side of what the people are led to believe is ‘bad’.

Ridiculous how easily manipulated people are

dual GCC citizenship is allowed, it’s been in the papers for ages..

Al Dossary is not treated as a national hero, the people of Bahrain are merely sympathizing with him and his family for the fact that he’s been in that horrible inhumane Guantanamo torture prison..

And, i’m, confident that you know better than to believe what is listed in Wikipedia..

I stand corrected, Bahrain allowed dual GCC citizenship since 2002 (Source)

I’d take wikipedia or official US papers any day over claims of a suspected terrorist picked up from within the dunes of Afghanistan.

It’s the principal of the thing. Quite a number of people, if not the majority, are not even against Guantanamo, what they are against is detention without trial.

It is this fact – I think, including me – that people supported him, not for himself, but for the injustice of the situation.

I also fully realise that the Salaf/Muslim Brotherhood/Arabist crowd will laud him as a hero because he fought the Americans. That I do not agree with.

Like you, I hope that he will stand a just trial for his actions. But I very much doubt that this will ever happen.

I do hope that he will at least be under surveillance for a few years.

Guantanamo, detention without trial and torture, are all things I’m wholeheartedly against, and I truly sympathize with the detainees for the torture they have/had to endure.

I don’t like what happened in Afghanistan too, but that does not mean AlQaeda is anywhere further from being terrorists.

Amal, Mahmood, and COH, I see where you guys are coming from.. but look at it this way.. this guy has been a hot cannon all his life.. think of his detention for 5 years as a favor,, coz he’s been as far away as possible from this part of the world. If he wasn’t detained, I assure you he will pick the next target and try to blow it up. You can’t start guessing how close to home it might be.

I understand that treating these terrorits like they had the plague is inhumane.. but whats really upsetting is the arab media has been so focused on a bunch of terrorists in handcuffs, yet glaringly ignoring the darfur massacre. Peculiar.

  • Ammar said:

Funny how the Arabs always try to make it like we are the victims, we’ve been done wrong, the whole world screwed us over. Even when it comes to something like this, we scream and shout that its unfair.

Maybe I did not express myself well, but what I meant to say is, I don’t like the torture, but if Juma is a terrorist then he is. My sympathy about the horrors of Guantanamo has nothing to do with it. I agree with moodz.

I wonder if there will be a fair trial any way …

I don’t know upto what extent sympathising would reach …

In saudi an ex- Guantanamo prisoners will been given aid to get married, and may be furnishing a house and a car by a member of the royal family …

Hope that this does’nt happens again here …

This guy is a hero, he fought against the infidel Russians to free our brothers and sister of Islam, this guy is a national here they should have a monument holding his name in gold, because he rose the banner of the holy jihad against the infidel west lol.

Now do you believe a word I said?

How filthy is the new terrorist mentality?

Why do those monkeys get houses and money? for what what have they achieved?

And if anybody is convinced that it is jihad what those bearded monkeys are doing is Jihad then he is insane,

I feel sorry for those sick people.

In my opinion the inmates of Guantamo Bay are prisoners of war, and they should be held until the war between Al Qaeda and the rest of us is over. As Bin Laden declared war, it is up to him or his designated successor to admit defeat.

The POWs should not be tortured. It is doubtful whether they should even be questioned.

How many did America kill in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine? Aren’t they supporting Israelis?. What’s the underlying reasons behind attacking America? Why not attack Brazil or Argentina? It’s unfortunate to see people who talk without deliberate thinking Someone who is wise and logical would realize that America is paying the price for their stupid political acts.
