Ok, mind my very loose translation here you guys:

The Small Sixth Traffic Court headed by Judge Hani Abdel Salam and Secretary Mubarak Salem, sentenced a gulf national to one year and a fine of 200 Dinars after driving into the car of Mr.Samir Abdallah Muhammad a goalkeeper and member of Ahli Handball Team, in an incident that led to his death.

The man was reported to have been driving his vehicle on December 11 under the influence of alcohol, entered the left lane in the opposite direction leading to a strong collision with the car of Mr.Abdullah (34 years of age), the incident led to his death.

The accused was immediately released after the prosecution charged him with the manslaughter, and traveled back to his country, the defendant did not attend the court hearing yesterday, but his counsel attended. Via Akhbar AlKhalij

How much longer will we have to endure the pain and atrocities due to the carelessness of drunk driving? One year and Two Hundred Dinars in return for reckless driving, endangering the lives of fellow drivers and taking the life of an innocent young athlete!! Now hold it there a second.

We are supposedly a country that believes that the death penalty is justified by its ability to save lives through its deterrent impact (be it by religion, or practice) shouldn’t we seriously consider using the ultimate penalty against drunk drivers?

It is the second time that a murderer escapes with minimal punishment in return of taking the life of a young innocent man (that I can recall of the top of my head), what kind of law is this that protects murders because they were under the influence of drugs, alcohol or narcotics! It is all a matter of choice they made, and they made one to ingest those toxins very aware of the fact that it may significantly affect their behavior later on; it doesn’t make it any less of a crime to be under the influence in my view, if anything it makes it even worse!

At the very best, shouldn’t our parliament be more concerned with incidents like those?

I pass my deepest condolences and sympathy to the family of Samir Abdulla, not only on the loss of their beloved but on a sentence as absurd as this.

I was surprised by how common drink driving is in here. Most people who drink do not at all mind driving after drinking, and think that does not really “qualify” as drink driving, because they have not made an accident yet, and that they “can” drive because they are not wasted.

The problem is, lack of means of transport. There is no public transport one can take, and taxis are the only option. How do all people who go drinking come back home?

We’re actually closer as country to being retards than we are to truly respecting the value of human beings.. The oil, the commercial banks and the malls did not make much of a difference to the core mentality..
We live in one huge complicated neighbourhood where random barbarian tribal decrees still exist..
Controlling drunk driving is not an issue to the so-called parliament.. The won’t even accept a social-financial contribution to aid the unemployed..

Is it just me or has the judicial system here fallen completely apart? If you’re Indian, Sri Lankan, etc.. and kill someone you get the death penalty. If you’re Bahraini, Saudi, etc.. you get fined and maybe a minor prison term. Sad state of affairs…
