What’s in your Shawarma?

Submitted by moodz on Monday, 4 June 200718 Comments

Shawarma!Shawrma’s are little pieces of heaven right here on god’s green earth. The unique mixture of the animal fat, the greased slices of spiced and marinated beef or chicken, a slight touch of taheena, pickles, vegetables or even taboula wrapped in a thin slice of pita bread is just unmistakable. A true signature dish of the Middle East, our very own burrito sandwich!

And it does more than tickling your taste buds, Shawarma’s are by far the worse type of junk you could feed your body. If we overlook the nutritional facts, the beef or chicken used are often stored in extremely bad conditions, laid out to marinate for weeks in vinegar and lime. Often covered by nothing more than a dirty cloth or some paper they use to wrap the sandwiches in, one night after the other before the full large cone of meat is sold out at ridiculously low prices after hours of exposure to all sort of pollutants of the streets, all of which at room temperature.

Away from all of this, the large knife used to slice off the meat is often sharpened skillfully by rubbing the edges of the knife itself against a knife file every once in a while, you wana guess what happens to the residue? In my shawrma and yours, I was watching the shawarma guy the other day as I was waiting for my order, out of 3 times he sharpened the knife, he only cleaned it once with a cloth that was hanging on his shoulder, which he later used to wipe off the dripping sweat of his forehead.

Do you know what’s in YOUR Shawarma?!

It is actually bad, thats why Donner kebabs are now being cut with a machine.

even tho, none of us can stop eating those tasty lil shwarmas, I personally love the street meat group (shwarma, tikka..etc) although most of that is not made in the best way’s nor using the best of ingredients but it tastes good and I will eat it.

Last April a weekly newspaper here in Oman wrote a similar article about this. They actually pointed the same things you pointed here.

I even blogged about that article. You can find it in the following link:-

one day, you will be leaving the office quite late, passing by adlia or bu kwara, and you will smell that delicious smell of cocked meat, and you will look at that greasy thing thinking, is it worth it not to?

Well, you have to consider a number of factors here… Human bodies have a reasonable tolerance for a lot of the crap we manage to stuff into our stomaches… All that fast food, canned food, etc etc… Its not natural, yet our body still manages to digest it, germs or otherwise. What i’m seeing a lot of these days is people complaining about germs, cleanliness etc etc… I’m not aiming this at you specifically, but in general think about it; years and years ago before germs were even discovered, people were eating raw meat, not properly cooked, probably roast over a fire and holding it with their dirty hands (since soap didn’t exist back then either). Obviously those people survived, otherwise we wouldn’t be here.

Theres a movie documentary that recently came out about the fast food market, fast food nation i think it was called. Funny little movie. The story is basically that one of the meat supplying firms wasn’t clean enough, so there was actually a reasonable percentage of shit (yes, thats right, shit) in the meat, which was later processed and then served in a certain fast food joint. Bruce Wills’ character in the movie is the meat supplier, and he quotes “There is ALWAYS shit in the meat, you have to have a little bit of shit in the meat”. Well, yeah you probably do, and as long as you don’t actually think about, you’ll be fine.

A few workers in our area got Salmonella poisoning. It is a good thing that they did not die and they have fully recovered. ~
