Multiculturalism at Work
I have been following and digging around this issue with passion this past week, I guess there is something that draws me to such news piece. I find it really amusing that the laws and teachings of the Islam are respected and abided by as basic human rights more in the west than they are within the Islamic world itself.
Stories like that of the airport taxi drivers that refused on religious grounds to take passengers with alcohol or dogs (Source), or that of cashier that that refused to handle pork products (Source) or that about the pharmacist that refused to fill in prescriptions of abortion or “the morning after” pills (See previous source) Now the latest islamphobic issue going through Europe regarding a citation from the Quran in a divorce case of a Muslim couple of Moroccan origin in Germany:
He beat her and threatened her with murder. But because husband and wife were both from Morocco, a German divorce court judge saw no cause for alarm. It’s a religion thing, she argued.
The Koran seems to have become the basis for a court decision in Frankfurt.
The case seems simply too strange to be true. A 26-year-old mother of two wanted to free herself from what had become a miserable and abusive marriage. The police had even been called to their apartment to separate the two — both of Moroccan origin — after her husband got violent in May 2006. The husband was forced to move out, but the terror continued: Even after they separated, the spurned husband threatened to kill his wife. (Source)
But in each case, outraged ordinary citizens (including some moderate Muslims) forced a retreat. The German case is covered today by the AP via Newsday:
Politicians and Muslim leaders denounced a German judge for citing the Quran in her rejection of a Muslim woman’s request for a quick divorce on grounds she was abused by her husband.[…]
Yada yada yada..
Court vice president Bernhard Olp said Thursday the judge “regrets that the impression arose that she approves of violence in marriage.”
While the Quranic verse cited does say that husbands are allowed to beat their wives if they are disobedient, Germany’s Institute for Islamic Questions noted that such an interpretation was no longer standard.
“Of course not all Muslims use violence against their wives,” the group said in a statement.
I googled the matter, browsing one page after another trying to find something or someone that’ll forbid hitting wives, what I found isn’t exactly amusing. But, away from all of this..
This is supposedly multi-culturalism and political correctness at work, but in the fervor to be politically correct and be multi-cultural all reason is thrown out and replaced with simple propagandistic palaver.
While it might be true -to a certain extent- that violence against one’s wife isn’t acceptable in Islam, as most muslims sure don’t batter and mistreat their women, the bitter irony is that those proclaiming tolerance the loudest are also the ones laying the groundwork for its demise. Why tolerate such outrageous schools of thoughts, whether or not they are in fact tolerated in Islam or not is just beyond me.
In Europe, as opposed to America the multi-culturalism has amounted to a kind of apartheid (in the US the melting pot still prevails, though how much longer I cannot tell). Since the many Muslims in Europe are relegated to low paying jobs, do not normally assimilate, do not even always get trained in the local language, drop out of schools early, live in Islamic ghettos, have high unemployment rates, etc. This is always an indicator of high probability of revolt, though no one in Europe seems to care (except for some shy measures by France, pushed by the wave of riots that took place).
Large populations of angry young Muslims who completely reject European civilization can now be found in many of Europe’s cities. Many of the Muslim immigrants are openly hostile to open, Western, secular European values, especially women’s rights, gay liberation, pornography and women’s sexual freedom.
Would there ever be a true multicultural society, one in which all cultural groups blends in with equal rights and political status? Modern history have taught me otherwise, but for the sake of humanity, for good faith, I hope that I’m wrong.

“Since the many Muslims in Europe are relegated to low paying jobs, do not normally assimilate, do not even always get trained in the local language, drop out of schools early, live in Islamic ghettos, have high unemployment rates, etc.”
This isn’t generally true in Britain. I live in a suburban area with many large Victorian houses. These are popular with Muslim families, and there are several such families living in the same street as me. They spend a lot of money on house improvements. There are lots of Muslim students at the local university.
Yes, there are poorer parts of town with many Muslim families, but I don’t see it as a ghetto. There are older people who came here when already middle-aged who still speak little English – but their children and grandchildren speak English.
There is a school just around the corner, and I see kids of every kind being dropped off by their parents. Plenty of mixing going on.
So far as I can tell, even with the very close links many people have with Pakistan, the proportion of extremists and potential terrorists is tiny. Of course, a few hundred can mount a horrific campaign.
Testing testing (for the 21321st time) – …Success
Well this is an interesting discussion.. I remember having a debate in college (in the US) about the extent to which you should respect someone’s culture vs. interfering to protect a violated human right.. e.g. female circumcision is a culturally-mandated practice in many African countries.. should we then respect/not critique it? Where do we draw the line? It’s a very thin line..
